British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
