A group of six unlikely but resilient youngsters fall into the way of a vast and dreadful supernatural darkness that has infiltrated our existence from the farthest reaches of darkness. They must devote their lives confronting it, experiencing terror upon terror in the struggle.

A Resonant Plot with a Distinctive Spin

This is the plot, in essence, of the master of horror’s iconic book It (arguably his finest; no arguments). It parallels of the celebrated author’s heir Joe Hill’s recent massive horror novel, in which six friends call forth the age-old, utterly malevolent beast King Sorrow from the Abyssal Void to aid them in overcoming some antagonists. Needless to say, their arcane ceremony goes awry.

Celebrating a Authorial Legacy

Joe Hill launched his profession going to great lengths to distance himself from his well-known dad, adopting the nom de plume he still uses today and steering clear of encounters with his agent (he possesses a striking resemblance to his dad). Yet with this recent release, he leans into it. There are lines that consciously reflect some of King’s most famous (the famous Dark Tower introduction); a scene that evokes a signature King element (a riddling contest). In this whopper of a novel, Hill is delighting in his lineage, and readers share in the joy.

The Cast of the Main Characters

Back to those friends: five of them are pupils at the fictional Rackham College in Maine. There’s Arthur, studious and intelligent, deciphering historical enigmas in his free moments; Colin, affluent, sharp, and inclined to bulldoze obstacles in his path; twins Donna and Donovan; the stunning Allie herself. Then we have Gwen, who doesn’t study with them, but becomes a key part of their band as they toy, partly convinced, partly skeptical, in arcane arts.

The Fateful Summoning

Arthur is, due to circumstances beyond his control, compelled to pilfer prized manuscripts from his beloved college library by a group of neighborhood thugs. This devastates his scholarly soul, especially when he’s forced to acquire the library’s most valuable and chilling publication: the diary of adept this enigmatic character (executed “for conspiring with dark forces in 1703”; the binding is fashioned from his hide). The intrepid group read the journal, realize they are able to call forth what the author references as a “proud worm to aid our hero with his extortion dilemma – and spend the rest of the novel facing the fallout. King Sorrow will certainly eliminate those troublesome local drug dealers, but they must select a fresh offering annually or become his victim themselves. In the character’s own words: “You invoke terrible forces, all you get is more dragons.”

Narrative Versatility and Inventive Range

Moving through four decades, Hill also moves with seamless grace between genres: as the friends strive to manage the situation they find themselves in by, through diverse methods, picking people who are obviously evil to offer up, or hunting down ways to destroy the entity themselves, we move between thriller to grim fantasy, covert operations to romance to fright. One particularly memorable shift was to a heroic journey, far beneath the surface below Cornwall, a part tinged by the Lord of the Rings author that was wonderfully frightening.

A Detailed Canvas of Fear and Courage

The novel features trolls – bridge-dwelling ones and digital trolls, truly terrifying and expertly realized. The story includes mystic weapons and betrayals, heart-stopping scenes of bravery and instances of appalling malevolence, both mortal and supernatural. It stands as a masterpiece: a chilling book that is primarily a paean to the imagination, and to love and friendship. “We required a narrative to trust and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says this character as the companions gather at the table, making preparations to call forth their serpent into existence with the strength of their collective will.

As Hill puts it in his opening statement: “This is dragon territory”. Don’t miss them.
