Vicky McClure are set to reprise their roles in the popular crime series

The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
