Paceman Atkinson Compounds the English team's Injury Worries.
'Serious blow' for the touring side after Atkinson is forced off with a hamstring injury.
The pace bowler added to the fitness woes of the England squad when he left the field during Saturday's play of the Boxing Day Test in the Ashes series.
The pace bowler pulled up with his left hamstring immediately following a delivery that he bowled at the MCG.
The touring camp stated the 27-year-old reported "discomfort" and was to take time away from the action to undergo evaluation "over the next few hours".
The series decider in this Ashes battle in Sydney gets underway on Sunday, 4 January.
The English side has previously lost fast bowlers Mark Wood to a knee injury and another paceman with an abdominal strain during this series.
Matthew Fisher was called up to provide backup.
Atkinson struggled in the opening two Tests, managing only a handful of scalps.
He was dropped from the previous Test, only to be brought back for the Melbourne Test as Archer's replacement.
The county bowler performed better in the fourth Test, bagging two scalps during the host's first knock, then making 28 while batting among just a trio of teammates who passed ten runs.
Following a brief spell late on the first day, he came back the next day and dismissed the nightwatchman edging to the keeper.
However, towards the conclusion of the fifth over, he sent down a variation to Travis Head and suddenly grabbed at his leg.
Gus Atkinson was brought back for the Melbourne match having missed the Adelaide game.
