SNAP Payments Set to Cease for 41 Million During Ongoing US Government Shutdown
Federal agriculture authorities stated on Saturday that monthly food benefits through a critical national social assistance programs will not be distributed next month because of the continuing federal closure.
Closure Continues Through Its Third Week
The government shutdown had reached its 25th day when the announcement was made, coming after demands from hundreds of Congressional Democrats pushing the department to utilize contingency funds to cover the upcoming nutrition payments.
“The reality is, the well has run dry,” officials announced. “Currently, assistance will not be provided” on 1 November.
National Consequences
Tens of millions of people count on these food benefits, per official statistics. Various areas, such as New Mexico, dependence on the program affects 21% of residents.
Internal communications seen by Reuters showed that USDA officials decided against using emergency reserves to cover next month's assistance.
Political Stalemate
Congressional leaders are still at odds regarding how to support and resume government operations.
Comments by the leader of a budget research center noted that the administration had opportunities to take earlier action to prevent benefits from running out.
“Officials were able and expected to made moves weeks ago to make arrangements to access these resources,” the comments added. “Instead, they might decide against it in an effort to gain political advantage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to push upper chamber Democrats to approve a funding package that would reopen federal functions.
States Prepare
Governors in multiple regions issued emergency declarations recently to make money available for hunger relief preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping next month.
