The Academy Awards to Depart ABC and Broadcast Live on YouTube Starting in the Year 2029.
The Oscars ceremony are set to start broadcasting solely on YouTube in the year 2029, representing the most recent significant shift in Hollywood.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the news on this week, indicating that it finalized a long-term agreement giving YouTube the sole worldwide broadcasting rights to the Oscars through 2033.
The Oscars, scheduled for 15 March, has been televised for 50 years on the traditional network. Beginning in 2029, the ceremony will be available live and for free on YouTube.
It's a further substantial restructuring in the entertainment world, which is dealing with company buyouts and fusions, along with steep reductions in filming.
"Our Academy represents an global institution, and this alliance will allow us to increase availability to the mission of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience attainable - which will be advantageous for our film artists and the film community," remarked Academy leadership in a statement.
Throughout a long period, viewership of the awards show have fallen, though there was a minor increase in recent years, with a considerable amount of younger viewers tuning in from smartphones and desktops.
In a related comment, YouTube's CEO referred to the Oscars "one of our essential cultural institutions" and said that working with the Academy would "inspire a younger cohort of creativity and movie fans while remaining faithful to the Oscars' storied heritage".
The broadcast network, which has televised the awards since 1976, stated that it was eagerly anticipating "to the upcoming broadcasts" it will continue to air.
This shift follows major studios face intricate takeover attempts. Such proposals were seen as unfavourable for an sector that has witnessed severe reductions over the recent period.
Like major studios, cable networks have faced issues as the viewers has increasingly opted for on-demand video instead.
YouTube winning broadcasting rights to the Oscars strongly indicates that dependence on streaming sites will carry on expanding.
