The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... Currently.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the hit sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. He is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It's like being an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it from others, and that's on purpose. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Does the creator See the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff are not listening by fan response, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
