What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events before the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
